The Science of Composition

  • Music Theory: Scales, chords, and melody without sheet music (using MIDI).
  • Arrangement: Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Drop. Building emotional tension.
  • Sampling: Art creative audio manipulation and copyright ethics.

  1. Morning Direct Instruction (09:00 - 10:30) Deep dive into a specific concept (e.g., “Designing 808s from scratch” or “Parallel Compression techniques”).

  2. Guided Lab Time (10:45 - 12:30) Apply the concept immediately. Campers work on their individual workstations with headphones.

  3. Listening Lunch (12:30 - 13:30) Analyze professional tracks while eating. “Deconstruction” sessions.

  4. Collaboration & Recording (13:30 - 15:30) Group projects. Record vocals, live instruments, or foley sounds in the recording booth.

  5. Track Feedback Circles (15:45 - 17:00) Playing works-in-progress for the group. Learning to give technique-focused critique.

Project Spotlight: “The Remix Challenge”

Section titled “Project Spotlight: “The Remix Challenge””

In week 2, all campers participate in our signature Remix Challenge. Students are given the stems (individual audio tracks) of a popular song and have 48 hours to reimagine it in a completely new genre.

“The Remix Challenge taught me that creativity loves constraints. Turning a pop ballad into a drum-and-bass track forced me to use every tool I learned.” — Marcus, Age 15

Every camper has access to a professional workstation.

  • Controllers: Arturia KeyStep 37 & Novation Launchpad
  • Monitoring: Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Headphones
  • Instruments: Access to hardware synthesizers (Moog, Korg), guitars, and drums
  • Plugins: Serum, Valhalla DSP, FabFilter Bundle, Soundtoys
